Newstalk focuses on mental health of ethnic minorities

CaptureLast Saturday 7th of September, 2013 Newstalk’s programme Global Village dedicated the full show to marking World Suicide Prevention Day, with a two-hour special focusing on mental health. In a week in which three reports on suicide and self-harm were launched by Minister for State Kathleen Lynch, Newstalk examined facts, stats and contributing factors behind Ireland’s suicide epidemic.

Cairde contributed to the on-air discussion rising awareness about challenges that ethnic minorities living in Ireland face when trying to access mental health services. We joined other panellists: representatives of support groups, individuals who shared their lived experience, and notable psychiatrists and psychotherapists who will provide plenty of advice for our listeners to manage their mental health:

  • ·       Ivor Browne, Psychiatrist, author, and former Chief Psychiatrist of the Eastern Health Board
  • ·       Gerry Raleigh, Director of the National Office for Suicide Prevention
  • ·       Caroline McGuigan, CEO and Founder of SOS (Suicide or Survive)
  • ·       John Saunders, Director of See Change
  • ·       Thomas McCann, Psychotherapist with the Traveller Counselling Service
  • ·       David Carroll, Director of Services at Belong To
  • ·       Emilia Marchelewska – Health Advocacy Officer with Cairde
  • ·       Dr. Pradeep Chadha, ‘The drugless psychiatrist’, who works with the BR Clinic Stress Centre
